In the aftermath of a violent galactic collision between two galaxies this majestic object was born. Although, the two galaxies are still merging and will one day become a unified galaxy. At some point in the collision a shockwave occurred and caused some matter to fall towards the center and then propagate outwards to form the ring. The perpendicular part is the companion galaxy. Also known as Mayall's object, it sits 500 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major (The Great Bear).
